Reviewing web hosts is hard. There is little to differentiate one from another, and bad reviews can lead to chain reactions from which the web host being reviewed may not recover or may lose money. With the commoditized nature of the business, small differences in service can lead to large differences noticed by observers. This article continues our series of web host reviews. Discuss (7)
I am going to be reviewing a couple of web hosts today. I will look at BlueHost (who also owns Hostmonster) and Hostnine. We will look at the service, some user experiences, how quickly they respond to their users, and how easy it is to use and navigate around the control panel. Discuss (1)
Welcome to another installment in our series on Cybercrime, Cybercriminals, and Internet Syndicates. We last left off discussing some of the methodologies of the Russian Business Network, such as fake anti-spyware programs, the iFrameCash affiliate program, and search exploits. Here, we will pick up where we left off, wrapping up our discussion of the other methods used by this, and other, groups. Discuss (1)
April 7, 2008 marked the launch of Google's newest project, Google App Engine. For years, web developers have basically had two choices when it came to building applications: host it on their own or use Amazon Web Services. Well, Google has now issued their response in the form of a full-stack, hosted, automatically scalable web application. Discuss (2)
Have you ever tried to explain yourself to someone, but for whatever reason, it just wasn't registering? You try breaking it down so that each part is more understandable by itself than as a whole. This sounds a lot like trying to mold your query into a search engine or website database. However, with the Semantic Web well on its way, eloquence as we know it may soon be a thing of the past. Reading on keep, please. Discuss (1)
The era of ultimate digitization is upon us and it redefines our lives. Almost every day there are new inventions and innovations in the fields of IT, computing, and electronics. Technology is advancing in quantum leaps. For instance, it's been a while since we've sent traditional mail. Can you still remember the days when homing pigeons were trained to carry messages long distances? It was back around World War 2. Discuss (1)
In my last article, I gave a broad overview of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, including specific types and how to protect yourself against them. However, any respectable DoS attacker isn't going to focus on you and your measly individual computer -- they're going for mass destruction, and if your computer gets caught in the crossfire, that's your tough luck. This article will examine two major DoS attacks that have occurred within the past year. Discuss (1)
In case you haven't noticed, the Internet is a dangerous place. Everywhere you turn there's someone trying to hack into your computer and either extract your vital information or simply unload as much spam as your system can hold. In most cases, they're just trying to make your online experience as frustrating as possible. In this article, we're going to examine how these cowards use denial-of-service (DoS) attacks for just that purpose. Discuss (1)
In our last article we discussed, briefly, the background of the RBN and gave an overview of their activities. In this second part of a series on Cybercrime, Cybercriminals, and Internet Syndicates, we will cover the various crimes and methods employed by the Russian Business Network and some of its affiliates in more detail. Discuss (1)
In this first in a series of articles, we will look into how Cybersyndicates make money, how they have evolved over the years, and what, if anything, companies and users can do to stop them. We'll discuss the various crimes they have committed (and continue to commit), and why, for the most part, they have eluded authorities.
Ever since the Internet debuted nearly two decades ago, we've been bombarded with an economic and technological reality that can be summed up in one word: globalization. The world is becoming more and more unified every day, at least in terms of telecommunications. But what if something happened that took an entire region of the world offline? Keep reading. I'm no economic expert, but with America on the brink of recession (or so they say) it's probably a good time for web hosting connoisseurs to examine how the domain industry might be affected. Is it truly a cause for panic, or simply incessant fear mongering? Hopefully this article will help you decide for yourself. Discuss (1)
Malware has grown to the point where the attackers no longer seek out the victims directly through email, but instead let the victim come to them through an enticing website advertisement. They hide within the sites like a crime syndicate using waste management as a front to run their criminal organization, only these guys aren't as lovable as Tony Soprano. Discuss (1)
